Jobsite Tours
A big part of our organization is the increased awareness of the construction industry and the way things are built. What better way to get a grasp on construction concepts in the real world than actually going to to see them built. Contractors from all accross the area are always willing to provide a platform for this type of unique education.
Chicago Trip
Every year, AGC takes an extended stay trip to a different area other than Iowa for a Jobsite tour in a different market and location. We've been to Minneapolis, Kansas City, and a host of others in the past. This year, we decided to visit Chicago and went on the following tours with:
- Power - Hospital project in downtown Chicago.
- Pepper - Remodel of an old Sears-Roebuck Warehouse to a Public School building.
- Walsh - Shedd Aquarium remodel
We left Ames at around 3PM on Friday, Februrary 28th and traveled via coach bus to Chicago where we stayed at a hotel Friday and Saturday night until traveling home on Sunday morning. The trip was full of great insight, exciting and interesting projects, and a great chance to bond as an organization. Thank Scott Hoskins for a great job in setting it up!

Above is a couple of photos taken on the dual-tour in the fall semester. Both Weitz and JEDunn were working on hospitals directly accross the street from eachother in Clive, Iowa. One was a concrete structure and the other, a steel structure. This was an amazing opportunity to check out the difference in not only methods and administrative ideals, but also the logistics behind both types of structures and the advantages and challenges of each. The slide show below are all the photos that were taken on the trip.
After the tour, JEDunn treated us to a great tailgate-type meal. We had food, games, and even got free hats! It was a great trip.
Scott Hoskins is our Sophomore Representative in charge of these tours. He contacts the companies and seeks out interesting projects that will not only have a great possiblity of learning, but also projects that will be fun and interesting to check out.
He has also planned our annual over-night trip. We will be visiting Chicago to check out projects by Power Construction and Pepper Construction. We will leave Feb. 27th and return home March 1st. This is always one of our biggest events of the year. We apologize if you were unable to make the list, but stay tuned for details about other jobsite tour possiblities this semseter.
