Recruitment

Why is recruitment important?

New members are the backbone of our sorority, the are the rock, the future. New members bring with them new ideas and view points on everything. They help shape our sorority in new and exciting ways. We encourage our new members to be involved in anything and everything they can. Our sorority is here to better the lives of our members and to make sure they succeed in all of their endeavours.

What is recruitment?

Recruitment is a special time during each semester that we actively search for potential new members to join us in our wonderful sorority. Although this time is designated for recruitment, we are constantly looking for new members to join our sisterhood.

There are two different kinds of recruitment in terms of the Iowa State University Greek Community. The Greek Community takes part in both formal recruitment and informal recruitment. Our chapter is part of informal recruitment only, for a couple of reasons the main one being that we do not have a facility. Even though we don't have a house it does not hinder us from meeting every week and making sure that our sisters stay well connected and social amongst each other and the rest of the Greek Community.

How Does Recruitment Work? What are the Requirements?

Recruitment events are listed on the calendar pages and also at the bottom of this page, they are free to any new member so money is not an issue. Interested women are always welcome at our weekly meetings. These meetings are held on Mondays from 8:00pm - 9:00pm in Howe 1252. By attending one of these meetings you will be able to see first hand how our chapter operates and what sort of things we participate in, so if you are interested at all this is a great way to dip your toes in without jumping into the water completely. We always love to see new people at our chapter so please don't be shy!!

Potential New Member

Once you have attended an event (for example a chapter meeting or any of the other events), you will be considered a potential new member. This doesn't mean that you have become a candidate or made any sort of obligation to the sorority. This only means that you have decided to come check us out. If you would like to contact the recruitment chair for any reason she would be happy to talk to you about setting up a meeting with her to talk more about the sorority or if you have questions you can contact her at ask-exec@iastate.edu.

If you decide to continue coming to our events and would like to join our sorority there are 2 things you should know when you decide to join, a potential new member must attend at least 3 events to become a candidate in the future. We also do require you to be in a technical major of some sorts. If you think you qualify, you may refer to our accepted majors page and check if your major is listed. If your major is not listed feel free to come to an event anyways and we can always look over your major to see if you qualify.

Candidates

Once you have become a candidate, you get to be more involved in actual sorority things. Candidates participate in a new member eduaction program that lets new members socialize with the sisters on a more one on one basis. You also get to be paired with a "Big Sis". This is someone special that will help you though the initiation process and will answer any questions you have about the sorority, college life or life in general. She is there to help you out in anyway she can.

Although we do love to have fun, we do also want our members to excel academically, so there are some grade requirements that go along with being a candidate and initiating into our sorority. Candidates must have an anticipated cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Candidates that do not have an Iowa State University grade point average should have a transfer grade point average of 2.5 or higher or a high school grade point average of 2.8 or higher.

Reasons Why Our Girls Joined Alpha Sigma Kappa, and Why you Should Too!!!

“I joined ASK because I knew I wanted to be a part of the greek community, but I didn't want it to be the only thing I was a part of in college. Being in ASK has allowed me to have amazing sister, gain lots of leadership experience, participate in fun things like greek week and formal and do it all within my tight budget. However, It has also allowed me to enjoy living in an apartment with my friends and to have time for lots of other clubs and activities.” – Megan VH (VP of Recruitment)

“I joined ASK because I wanted to enrich my time at Iowa State.  ASK was a great way to meet some awesome girls who share the same interests as me! It also provides many opportunities to become involved all over campus.” – Elise F.

“I'm an only child. I've always wanted sisters and I hope to make a lot of close relationships through the sorority.” – Sarah S.

“I joined ASK because I wanted to meet other women who share similar academic and professional goals and dreams, a long with similar interests. I also knew that this was a terrific opportunity to gain experience and leadership a long with life long friendship.” – Jessica R.

"I joined Alpha Sigma Kappa because of the great opportunities to develop great friendships and leadership skills while having lots of fun.  I am proud to be a member of a sorority that promotes the academic, professional, philanthropic, and social development of all of its members."- Diane Br.

"ASK has given me the opportunity to meet amazing women who are dedicated and determined to succeed. It has been a privilege to be a part of Alpha Sigma Kappa for the professional development, the social networking, and the abundance of lasting friendships I have made over the years. I would recommend Alpha Sigma Kappa to any woman who strives for excellence in every aspect of her life, because it is nice to be surrounded by women who do too."-Sarah W.
