Officer Nominations

At the last members’ meeting we took nominations for next year’s officers.  Gabe Flick was nominated to run for Ag Council Representative, but requests for nominations for the Officer of Marketing and Officer of Development positions went unanswered.  If you know anyone who may be interested in this, please send an email to a current officer.

VEISHEA Volunteers Needed

We need volunteers to help with setup and teardown at VEISHEA.  If you are interested, please contact one of the current officers for more information.

From past -

We have decided to begin acknowledging

past and future graduates of I Tech.  This

month we’ll be touching base with Michael

Chow, who graduated with his bachelor

degree in the fall of 2004.  Prior to attending

Iowa State he attended DMACC in Boone.

He currently lives in beautiful downtown Pella, Iowa, with his wife of over 13 years, Carla, and two golden retrievers, Augie and Nick.  He is employed by Vermeer Corporation, also located in Pella, as a Safety Engineer for two of the seven manufacturing plants.  He works with four other safety engineers under a Safety Engineering Manager and an EH&S and Security Director.  Some of his duties he describes may sound familiar to our readers: ensuring safe employee operation of equipment and tools, ensuring safe material handling, and developing safe work habits at the shop floor level.  These duties also include 500 hours of annual training, which includes but is not limited to: new hire orientation, powered industrial trucks (forklifts and scissor jacks), confined spaces, and hearing protection.  Michael also adds that Vermeer handles most of its own Industrial Hygiene sampling.  When asked if his job was what he expected, he says “absolutely”.  He says that classes in manufacturing

safety, knowing how to work in groups, and his internship with the Boone County

Supervisors gave him the most relevant experience to                                                                prepare him for his current job.  Michael has some                                                                    advice for future graduates: “There are lots of                                                                             opportunities for those who wish to work hard and put                                                              in the extra effort.  Due diligence is very important.                                                                   Work hard at your grades, they DO matter.”

A Special Thanks

We would like to say thank you DMACC for letting us use their facilities to make coasters.  Also thanks to all others who helped out with coasters and the Plinko board these last couple of weeks.
