The Iowa State University Chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America is a student run organization devoted to promoting knowledge of design-build and related topics. ISU DBIA holds regular meetings during the second Wednesday of each month. Free pizza and beverages are served at each meeting just before a presentation/discussion lead by an industry professional.
Design Build is a method of project delivery using a single source for architectural, engineering and construction services. In this scenario, one "master builder" is held accountable for the providing the entire package of services from concept to completion.
For the November ISU DBIA meeting Dirk Westercamp presented on Design Build project delivery, green design, and working in multi-disciplinary teams. Architect and ISU Alum, Westercamp is President of Woodruff Design LLC located in Ames, IA. He is also Design-Build Designated and LEED AP.
Westercamp highlighted the importance of having well-rounded project team members with knowledge spanning the areas of architecture, engineering and construction. He mentioned that his project managers/superintendents/estimators have become familiar with parts of his design process and that this helps provide better answers to an owner's questions.
During the presentation, he walked us through an architectural bubble diagram. Architects use bubble diagrams to visualize relationships between architectural spaces (example).
