The Iowa State University Chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America is a student run organization devoted to promoting knowledge of design-build and related topics. ISU DBIA holds regular meetings during the second Wednesday of each month. Free pizza and beverages are served at each meeting just before a presentation/discussion lead by an industry professional.
Design Build is a method of project delivery using a single source for architectural, engineering and construction services. In this scenario, one "master builder" is held accountable for the providing the entire package of services from concept to completion.
For the February ISU DBIA meeting, Jim Hill, presented on Design-Build, Design Assist, BIM (Building Information Modeling) and how combining them can streamline the design and construction process.
Hill emphasized that the effort spent creating an integrated team, early on, and constructing the BIM model pays off over the course of a project. He described a situation where having a completed model almost a year in advance allowed his company to pre-fabricate large assemblies of their product in their shop. He mentioned that this method of constructing feels more like manufacturing and allowed their labor force to have steady work throughout that time period.
Jim earned both B.S. MET & MBA from Purdue University. For more information about Jim or Hill Mechanical, visit www.hillmech.com.
