Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Am I buying my friends?
Absolutely not! If you have ever been part of any organization, whether it is a boy scout troop, soccer team, or a golf club, you have to pay fees. These organizations have operating costs every year, as do we. Delta Upsilon is a non-profit organization, so in no way are we profiting from membership fees. Your fees help to cover events such as Formal, insurance on the house, and membership fees paid to International to cover the costs of membership materials and educational programming such as our annual International Conference.
  2. How much does it cost?
Every year fees are set out in a budget which must be approved by the Active Chapter. When you stop by the house, ask for a fee breakdown and we will be more than happy to provide one for you. You will see that every part of your fees are accounted for and if you ask any of the guys, being a part of Delta Upsilon is worth every penny. If you still have questions about our fees, make sure you talk to the VP-Finance. Since he is in charge of the chapter's finances, he'll be able to answer all of your questions.
  3. What is meant by "non-secret" and "non-hazing"?
That means that Delta Upsilon does not partake in any sort of physical or emotional hazing, nor do we have any secret ritals, handshakes or oaths. What we do is open to the public as we are proud of what we do. Hiding behind no secrets guarentees that you will be treated with the same care and respect that you expect to recieve from family and friends. We feel that hazing and secrets hinder the development of the individual as well as the growth of friendships and as such, have no place within Delta Upsilon. As a non-secret fraternity, we take particular pride in inviting family, friends, faculty and other special guests to our ceremonies. We feel that the positives of fraternity life should be shared with those we care about the most. Delta Upsilon is proud of its open and progressive nature and enjoys the opportunity to communicate that pride to others. There will not be a single activity that you won't be able to proudly and openly share with your family and friends.
  4. What will I get from a fraternity that I won't get from another student group?
The biggest difference between a Fraternity and other student groups is diversity. At Delta Upsilon, we strive for diversity. Our members come from different majors, different religions and races but we share Four Founding Principles: The Promotion of Friendship, The Development of Character, The Diffusion of Liberal Culture, and The Advancement of Justice. Student groups are usually major specific or for people that share the same interests or hobbies. Delta Upsilon tries to combine all of the features of the other student groups into one fantastic experience. Members are from all majors and there is likely someone to help you if you are struggling in one of your courses. We also participate in a variety of intramurals as well as other activites such as Homecoming and VEISHEA. The reason that we are all here is to get an education and part of that is to become better men in the process. However, you don't just go to school, you go to Iowa State University! ISU has so much to offer that it would be too time consuming to experience it all individually. By combining a lot of different activities, with people from all walks of life and all majors, Delta Upsilon helps to show you the other aspects of ISU that many people overlook.
  5. As a parent, I remember the "Animal House" like fraternities when I went to school, why would I let my son join one now?
Fraternities have most likely changed a lot since you went to school. Fraternities now encompass a range of activities, people and diversity that makes the University experience better. Everyone in the fraternity realizes that we are all here for one reason: to get an education. Throughout the year, Delta Upsilon provides extensive programming in which we improve our academic skills, run charitable events and engage with our communities. If your son forgets the reason why he is here at Iowa State University, don't worry, Delta Upsilon has safety nets in place, especially our academic program to ensure the continued success and acheivement of all of our members in their University endeavors.
  6. Won't being a member of Delta Upsilon take up a lot of time resulting in poor grades?
