To: mountaineers@iastate.edu Subject: minutes 2/10/03 ISUMCC Minutes for 2/10/03 Hello gang, After last Monday's break we resumed with a flurry of activity. First of all The UNI Climbing Competition is coming up March 1st. To participate you need to sign up and get regestered. There was an informational link sent out, but I don't have it on me at the moment. There are new events this year including speed climbing in which you are pitted against another contender in mortal combat. Two men enter, one man leaves! Ok, actually it's a race between two climbers on two specified routes. Once both are up they switch routes and race up again. The fastest average time wins, and THEN the loser is slain! There's even talk of adding an event where climbers race to the bottom of a plastic cup, but that's just speculation at this point. Everyone who goes seems to really like the competition and it's an opportunity to meet other climbers, snag some cool prizes, party it up, and maybe even do a little climbing if one feels so inclined. Skill levels are as follows: Beginner-up to 5.9, Intermediate-5.9-5.11, and Advanced 5.11 on up. Fees are $20 for 1 event, $25 for 2 or more. An ISU climbing competition, known as the Everest climbing comp is scheduled for March 8th here in Ames. The club is not officially hosting it although I'm sure there will be opportunities to help. We've decided not to take a spring break Mountaineering trip for lack of necessairy leaders. However, we are encouraging those interested to sign up for the Outdoor Rec Mountaineering/Ice Climbing trip to Colorado. It sounds like it'll be a great way for people to get some experience on the silent giants of the West. The cost $130 which includes food for the week, and the club might be subsidizing a portion of that for our club members. TRIPS 2/15/03: Ice Climbing at Brickyards. Last I heard there were 2 spots till available for this day trip. Cost is $10. You need to provide your own outerwear and boots, the sturdier the sole the better. 2/22/03: Snowshoeing at Brown's Woods. Pending snow's presence of course. I swear this is the most indecisive winter I've weathered yet. Our former trip coordinator sent dropped us a line to say that he's working on his tan by the full moon of Fiji. SEMINAR Ryan Galbraith, a club alumni, presented the group with an introduction to mountaineering. Covered were the conceptual outlines of the sport, hazards and concerns of which to be aware, gear, and mountain features & topography. Thank you Ryan. Next week's seminar will be by Adam Petts on training. OTHER STUFf Meetings: Mondays 8:00 pm in 1810 Gilman. Club Climb: Sundays and Wednesdays from 10:30 pm till Midnight. Dues: $20 per semester. That is all. There is no more. J
