To: mountaineers@iastate.edu From: Eric Lesch Subject: ISUMCC minutes 9/8/03 Date: Sun, 14 Sep 2003 22:32:31 -0500 (CDT) ISUMCC Meeting at 8 PM in 1810 Gilman Hall Club climbing hours are 10:30-12 PM every Monday and Sunday at the rec. Hey climbering folk. This is Eric, your secretary. How's everyone's year going so far? Its pretty crazy, but it turns out its already the third week of school. Yeah, but don't worry, I'll do my best to keep everyone up to speed. We had our second meeting this week and I think we, the exec, are getting our act together. Elections were held to fill the spot of Alex, our previously elected president since she has left us for better, or at least hillier places. Congratulations to Seamus Kelley and John Kassie our new president and vice president respectively. That brings the current list to: Seamus Kelley-president John Kassie-vice president Tim Newton-trip coordinator Andrea LeClere-treasurer Eric Lesch(me)-secretary Adam Petts-SCC rep Cool stuff coming up that you might want to consider coming to: Clubfest- I guess this one already happened, but Clubfest was today and from what I hear it was a great success, sounds like people are really interested in the club. Everyone should give Andrea and Joy a high five for making such a nice poster. Free BBQ at Brookside park- Grab yourself and come hang out at Brookside September 22 at 6 PM. There should be some good food and the slack line is definitely going to make and appearance. If you don't know what slack lining is stop by and enjoy the spectacle in all its glory. I'm not sure but there may also be some bouldering?, so interested parties might be advised to bring shoes with. Leadership Certification Seminar Series- Adam Petts, the stud that he is, will be leading a series of seminars starting next week immediately following the Monday meetings. These seminars are intended to teach people the skills they need to become trip leaders. Trip leaders are the guys who lead the trips, obviously. They make sure everyone stays safe and set up the ropes for everyone to climb on. Even if you're just starting out, everyone is invited to come to these, they're usually pretty fun and it's a good chance to play with gear. *Also, we are in the process of getting Charlie Wittmack to come to Ames to give a presentation on climbing Everest. This should be an awesome (free) presentation, however date and time have yet to be determined, look to following minutes to stay in the know. Still more... TRIPS. TRIPS...and more TRIPS This week, 9/19-9/21 we will be going to Redwing Minnesota for some great top roping and sport climbing. If your interested in going, there will be a sign up sheet at the meeting on Monday. *A Note About Weekend Trips: The cost for weekend trips is $15. That includes climbing gear, transportation, any camping fees, and tents. It does not include climbing shoes (optional, but recommended) and food (you will need enough to feed yourself for the whole weekend) Don't stress out about this, you'll get a more detailed email on what to bring and what not to bring when you sign up for trips. I wanna stress that everyone is invited to these trips, even if you've never been climbing before. Its always a good way to get out of Ames for awhile and gets your hands on some real rock. If you are not a member of the club you are still allowed to come on one trip to see what its like. Speaking of club dues, they are $35 for the year and $20 for a semester. Being a member is a good thing for a couple reasons. It lets you come to club climbing hours at the wall, gets you a ten percent discount on climbing gear at Ames Outdoors, and lets you go on all the trips you want. Plus you get a special laminated card. Just a little more... The seminar this week was given by Seamus on the basics of climbing. He covered what types of gear you will need if you decide to get into climbing. It was a good lecture for people starting out that are not sure what type of gear they are going to need and what to look for in gear. Important points include 1)The only thing that the club does not provide is climbing shoes, so that is the first piece of gear new people are gonna want to invest in. (word on the street is that there is a sale going on for climbing shoes at Ames Outdoor right now) 2)other gear discussed includes beaners, belay devices, harnesses, ropes, and chalk bags(these are not provided by the club either, but you can get along fine w/out one) Tim talked briefly about the different places to climb in the Midwest. There are roughly five or six places around that the club visits regularly in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Wild Iowa, or Pictured Rock Wildlife Refuge being the closest(I think its like 1 1/2 hours away). Other than that there are the two gyms close by. Sorry for all the business in this, I wanted to make these minutes a good resource for people in the club to use. If there is anything else that you guys would like me to include feel free to let me know by email or at the meetings. I hope to see everyone either at the wall, on a trip, or the meeting, or something. Climbings cool. Eric Lesch elesch@iastate.edu
