To: mountaineers@iastate.edu From: Eric Lesch < elesch@iastate.edu > Subject: ISUMCC minutes for 9/15/03 Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 02:11:16 -0500 (CDT) ISUMCC Meetings at 8 PM every Monday night in 1810 Gilman Hall Club Climbing time is 10:30-Midnight Sundays and Wednesdays at Lied Rec. Hey rock climbers and affiliates, The fall climbing season is well underway. It's worth mentioning that once it starts getting cold we're not going to be able to take trips outdoors. So, if your interested in getting your hands on some real rock, it would be a good idea to come to the meetings, money in hand, and sign up sooner rather than later. We really want to make sure that everyone who wants to gets a chance to climb outside! -Also, as noted below, the BBQ will take place of the regular meeting next week. SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: *The date has been set for Charlie Wittmack to give his presentation about climbing Mount Everest. Mark you calendars for Thursday the 25th at 7 Pm in the Lush Auditorium, that's next Thursday! Don't miss this one, and bring as many friends as you can! Charlie is an old member of the club and is generously waiving his speaking fee on our behalf. The event is also going to be sponsored by Ames Outdoor. Tales of adventure on the tallest mountain in the world from a former ISUMCC, spread the word everyone! *FREE BBQ at Brookside Park! Don't forget to come to our bi-annual barbeque for some free food and slack lining. The date is Sept. 22nd at 6 PM and is happening in place of the regular meeting. We are planning burgers and hot dogs and will have veggie burgers for the meat challenged. The event is bring-your-own-beverage and we should have some chips and the like. Everyone is invited to come down to meet some new friends and talk with old friends. Seminar: This weeks seminar was given by John Kassie and it covered the three main types of rock climbing and the basic knots one encounters in climbing. If you don't yet understand the difference between top roping and sport climbing, don't worry. It will all become clear on the trip you will be taking (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). This very hands-on seminar gave everyone who wanted a chance to tie knots with the best of us. I seem to have missed who won the figure-eight knot tying race, but I can say with reasonable certainty that Steve won the bowline-tying contest in fine style, with his eyes closed. Tim wants everyone to know: The trip for Redwing Minnesota is going to happen as scheduled this weekend, the 19th-21st. It will be led by John Kassie and Eric Lesch. As of right now there are still seats available, but if you would like to go you should contact either one of us, via email. Don't wait as space is limited. The trip for the weekend of the 26th-28th is as of yet undetermined. Possible locations include Devils Lake Wisconsin, Blue Mounds Minnesota, or somewhere totally different. If you are interested in going on a trip during this weekend contact Tim Newton ASAP or swing by the BBQ Monday to put your name on the list. *Weekend trips are $15, which includes everything but food, climbing shoes, and a sleeping bag (outdoor rec. will rent you shoes and a bag for coins in the seat cushions). Trips are open to everyone, but after your first trip you need to become a member to go on any more trips. Club dues are 35$/year and $20/sememster payable to Andrea. Other cool stuff in the make: Leadership Seminar Series is currently underway. Tonight I believe they covered belaying. If you are interested in becoming a trip leader, or just learning more about climbing, it's never to late to attend. Seminars are free and given right after the meetings on Monday nights from 9-10 PM. That's it for me. Climb high crazy fools. Eric elesch@iastate.edu www.stuorg.iastate.edu/mcc/
