If you are interested in not having to be babysat, let Eric know you are interested: eredmond@iastate.edu *Important Notes from Chad's Av Awareness Talk* - Slab avs are the killer ones, like a textbook balanced on dominoes... - 90% caused by victim/human, not noise - Most likely on slope of 30-45* - Primetime (when you should really be worried) - 35-45* slope - Snow cracks or "WUMP"s at your approach - Snow blowing off the top of a ridge means leeside is loose snow - No trees probably means a slide path - Avy Eyes - Tree flagging - upside branches broken off - Hangfire - adjacent slab next to crown that could still slide - Traintrap - getting stuck in a gulley - So... - Plan your route - One person at a time on dangerous parts - Don't be above anyone else - PRACTICE with your transceiver (Club has some and we'll put together a day to practice soon) - And if you're screwed... - Swim, kick off your skis but keep your pack on - Make an air pocket as best you can and jam your hand up - ALWAYS ALWAYS keep your beacon on and covered by layers - Remember, snow packs like concrete - Good sources of information - Colorado Avalanche Information Center < http://avalanche.state.co.us/ > (CAIC) - American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education < http://avtraining.org/ > (AIARE) - Forest Service < http://www.fsavalanche.org/ >, "Think Like an Avelanche" < http://www.fsavalanche.org/NAC/IBTpages/index.html > - Canadian Avalanche Association < http://www.avalanche.ca/ > (CAA) *Old Business* UNI Rock Revolution Climbing Comp - February 23 - All skills - Get a t-shirt - $25 preregistration, $30 on the day - If you are planning on going, certain paperwork needs to be filled out! If you are planning on it, we need to know for allocations, which are first come, first serve. - Location about a half hour from Frisco, CO - High country is going to be like winter conditions - Some great ridges and mountains up there, i.e. Mount Quandary, great skiing - If you are interested, we need to know if you are comfortable with backcountry skiing/boarding, etc. - We also have snow shoes and people who are willing to teach others - Please please let us know as soon as you can if you are planning on going! T-shirts are underway, and maybe hats too. Adam has been working on a design for hats, if you have any suggestions please let us know. I (Rebecca) checked out hat prices, and it depends a lot on how many we want and where we get them. If we get a good number of them, we could buy them for $12 each. Now go enjoy some ski porn. I know I will. (If you don't get it, you should have been at the meeting!) -- Cheers, Rebecca Burch Animal Ecology Wildlife/Fisheries Professional Web Design rebecca.burch@gmail.com
