Climbing Wall Policies

  1. A Climbing Wall Supervisor must be present to climb on the wall.
  2. Observers, non-climbers/belayers and personal belongings are not allowed in the climbing area. Storage in the day-use lockers is recommended, and are available at the four corners of Lied Rec.
  3. Food and beverages are not allowed in the Climbing Area.
  4. Please remove all jewelry, tie back long hair, and tuck in all loose clothing.
  5. A shirt must be worn at all times when in the Climbing Area.
  6. Only climbing shoes and tennis shoes are permitted on the climbing surface. Bare feet, boots, or sandals are not permitted.
  7. Socks must be worn with all rental shoes.
  8. No cursing or loud offensive language is allowed.
  9. Do not step on ropes or daisy chains and do not drop or toss carabiners, belay devices, or helmets.
  10. Do not walk or boulder under people climbing.
  11. Bouldering is allowed as long as the person's feet are never higher than 42 inches from the climbing area floor.
  12. The use of chalk is limited to chalk balls or other confined chalk. Loose or colored chalk is not permitted.
  13. A maximum of (5) five ropes can be used during a given time period.
  14. Climbers must use proper safety equipment when engaged in roped climbing and are required to use the ropes, belay devices, and hardware provided by the Outdoor Recreation Center.
  15. Harnesses and helmets are provided for use at the wall. If a climber chooses to use his/her own harness, it must be checked by a Climbing Wall Supervisor prior to use, and must be worn according to manufacturer's specifications.
  16. All climbers must be protected by a top rope belay unless bouldering and should provide their own belayer. Climbing Wall Supervisors can belay climbers as their schedule and attention allows.
  17. A figure 8 follow through knot with a CMGA finish knot must be tied directly into climber's harness. Do not use a carabiner.
  18. The belay device must be attached to the belayer's harness by means of a locking carabiner and the belayer must be attached to the floor anchors with a locking carabiner. Do not attach the belay device directly to the floor anchors.
  19. Always check, double check, and triple check the climber's knot, harness, and belay system before each climb.
  20. There is a 20-minute time limit per rope when someone else is ready to climb.
  21. The adjustment or rearrangement of holds is prohibited. The wall will be changed periodically by the Outdoor Recreation Center staff. Suggestions may be directed to them.
  22. Only instruction provided by the Climbing Wall Staff is permitted.
  23. No unsafe conduct will be tolerated. The Climbing Wall Supervisor and Outdoor Recreation Center and Programs administrators have the right to deny access to the wall.
