Belay Skills Test

  1. Preparation
    1. Put on harness
    2. Double back buckle (if applicable)
    3. Double check partner's harness
  2. Tying in
    1. Knot tying -- Figure 8
    2. Thread rope through tie in point
    3. Knot tying -- Figure 8 Follow through
    4. Knot tying -- Finishing (CMGA)
  3. Belaying
    1. Threading rope through belay device
    2. Connecting & Locking the device to carabiner
    3. Connecting & Locking device to harness
    4. Connecting & Locking harness to daisy chains with carabiner
    5. Eyes on climber at all times
    6. Athletic/stagger stance
  4. Rope manipulation
    1. Hand on rope at all times
    2. Taking in rope
    3. Giving out slack
    4. Lowering
    5. Keeps proper tension on rope at all times
  5. Commands
    1. On belay?
    2. Belay on
    3. Climbing?
    4. Climb on
    5. Slack
    6. Thank You/Acknowledgement of request
    7. Tension/Take (especially before a fall or at the finish of a climb)
    8. Watch me (especially when trying a tricky move)
