About Us

History

The National Society of Black Engineers was founded at Purdue University in 1971. Its founding members, commonly referred to as the "Chicago Six," included Anthony Harris, Brian Harris, Stanley Kirtley, John Logan Jr., Edward Coleman, and George Smith. NSBE was originally known as the Black Society of Engineers. NSBE has grown very quickly since its inception, holding its first national convention in 1975 and incorporating as a non-profit organization in 1976.

Currently, NSBE has over 18,000 members in campuses in America, Canada, and West Africa, and is the largest student-run organization in the world. The National Society of Black engineers continues to fulfill its mission to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.
