Welcome! This is the web site of the Iowa State University Quiz Bowl Club (ISUQBC), where you can find information about the club and any events in which we participate. About UsMention "nine mothers" to any one of them, and they will immediately respond "Heimdall." Keepers of some of the most obscure factoids known to man, for ten points, name this Iowa State University organization whose name implies a container of exams. Answer: The Quiz Bowl Club As the question above states, we are a club dedicated to the advancement of the high school/collegiate game known colloquially as quiz bowl. We participate in and hold our own tournaments, and we meet regularly to keep our skills well-tuned. What is Quiz Bowl?Quiz bowl can be described as a hybrid of the game shows Jeopardy! and Family Feud, in that it is entirely based on one's knowledge rather than popular surveys, but rather than three individuals playing against each other, there are two teams. Unlike in Jeopardy!, a player has the option to buzz in at any time, even if the question has not been read completely. Should you require further detail, Wikipedia has an entry about quiz bowl. Affiliation and Question StyleWe currently participate in NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournaments) events. The NAQT utilizes questions of a format similar to the one above, known as the pyramid style. It gets this name because it starts out with some obscure fact that (probably) very few people would know, then continues to supply more common information. Pyramids usually end with a giveaway ("a container of exams" = "bowl of quizzes" => "Quiz Bowl Club"). MeetingsWe meet twice a week, on Monday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, in or around Room 2210 or 2213 of the Memorial Union. If you've done quiz bowl before or are just curious, you're more than welcome to drop in and check it out. Note on Site DesignThe current ISUQBC site (codenamed Scientias, Latin for "knowledge"), designed by Omar Germino, was launched in the spring semester of 2006. It was originally coded in HTML 4.01, but underwent a conversion to XHTML 1.0 prior to the next fall semester. PHP and CSS are also extensively utilized. The site is currently maintained by Scott Nystrom. Navigation is accomplished by means of the sidebar, where links to the major sections of the site can be found. Within a page's content, links to other pages on the site will be colored like so, and any links to pages outside of the Iowa State University domain will be marked with this icon: |
