With over 70 trains on three lines, the Ames area provides plenty of rail fanning
opportunities. Ames itself is served by the East-West Overland Route of
the Union Pacific. Also a branch that leaves the main at West Ames (MP
189) known as the Jewell Sub runs north towards the junction town of Eagle
Grove, IA. To the east through Nevada the former Rock Island
Minneapolis-Kansas City Spine Line crosses beneath the mainline.
Covered is about 60 miles of railroad the ISRRC members most often railfan. Our "territory" extends from the Kate Shelley Bridge west of Boone, IA to tiny Colo, IA about 17 miles from Ames. Coverage of the Jewell Sub runs from Jewell, IA to Ames, a distance of 20 miles and Fernald, 5 miles north of Nevada to Cambridge, 8 miles south of Nevada on the Spine Line. The lines bring together a heritage that covers from the legendary Kate Shelley, to UP's City Streamlines, to Rock Island's Rockets.
