beaker What does the ISU Chemistry Club do?

One of our typical activities is going out to elementary and middle schools in the area to perform chemistry demonstration shows and other activities to foster interest in chemistry. We cover a wide variety of reaction types, from acids and bases to combustions, explosions, and chemiluminescent clock reactions. Our message is that chemistry is not all books and equations, but rather how it can be exciting and relevant to everyday life.

Another important activity that we look forward to every year is our annual Veishea Show, which traditionally combines theatrical props and costumes with slapstick humor and chemistry demonstrations. We typically hold two shows on Veishea Saturday, performing before more than 500 people in all. We put many hours of preparation into this event and receive a lot of positive feedback from the faculty and our audiences.

We also organize some other social and service events on occasion, such as tending to our Adopt-a-Highway section, going out to dinner, sponsoring Club movie nights, and hearing faculty speakers at our meetings.

beaker Why does everyone keep calling it SCUM?

S.C.U.M. stands for Society of Chemistry Undergraduate Majors. This name goes back more than 20 years, and is the official name of our organization as registered with the University. However, we often use the name 'ISU Chemistry Club' because the former name doesn't really describe us too well anymore, since many of our members are not chemistry majors, and some aren't undergraduates either.

beaker Should people interested in joining know a lot about chemistry?

No. In fact, many of our members are not chemistry majors and joined the Club without having taken any chemistry courses. Those wanting to participate need only an interest in doing some hands-on work with chemicals and lab equipment, and showing others that chemistry can be interesting and fun. As an active member, you will learn the procedures and safety necessary to be a part of what we do. You can apply as much or as little "textbook chemistry" as you wish.

beaker How often are meetings held? What are they like?

Meetings are typically held one evening a week, but may be more or less frequent depending on what activites are scheduled.

The meetings are very informal. We typically present news and information about upcoming events, and then have an open discussion. Most weekly meetings last less than one hour, but special meeting times are often arranged for practicing and preparing demonstrations. Take a look at our minutes page to get a better idea of what goes on.
