Some dance floors require you to wear indoor dance shoes. If this is the case for an upcoming event, we will try to let you know. However just because special footwear isn't required doesn't mean it isn't important. The shoes you have on will determine your connection to the floor. If your footwear is too slick, you may fall and if it is too sticky, you may not be able to move with ease.
Here are 3 ways to acquire indoor dance shoes:
1. Buy Dance Shoes - This can expensive but they make some excellent shoes for swing dancers. Be sure to pick something comfortable and don't wear them outside if you can help it.
2. Resole Shoes - Bring your own shoes to a cobbler and have them exchange the rubber bottom for a suede one. The process is called resoleing, chroming, or sueding depending on who you talk to. Once sueded you shouldn't wear these outside. You can also do this yourself! Ask around to find the best cement and suede.
3. Tape Your Shoes - Put athletic tape, duct tape, or masking tape on the bottom of your shoes. This can give you a proper amount of friction and cost you a few pennies and 5 minutes of your time. Each type of tape has advantages/disadvantages so be prepared to experiment. Be sure that your tape will not ruin the dance floor.
Socks are a last ditch option. Sometimes they're too slippery and rarely provide the support dancers need.
This is pretty self explanatory. Basically, don't be creepy, be courteous, ask people to dance, keep yourself clean, don't preach to your partner, don't apologize for your skill, and don't hurt your partner. If you need clarification here is a great link. |
