Club! 217 Club Fast
Facts
The 217 Club’s first year was a great success thanks to the Charter Members who gave of themselves to help us complete two long overdue projects to improve the Charge House. Their generosity has laid the groundwork for the next seven years as we focus our efforts to reach our goal of a completely renovated House to dedicate at the Charge’s 90th Anniversary celebration at Homecoming 2009. Over $14,000 was raised in our first year allowing us to replace the kitchen floor linoleum with new tile and replace the drain piping from the bathrooms on 2nd and 3rd Floor. Both areas caused damage to their surrounding structure and furnishings and were in dire need of repair. We must thank the Undergraduates and local Alumni for their prep work in removing flooring and walls for the contractor, as well as installing a new sub-floor, dry wall and ceilings to save the 217 Club over $2000 this year! Their efforts and high quality work are commended and appreciated. In
2002, our donors provided
the funds necessary to complete two major projects at the House, renovation of
the Dining Room and the
construction of a new Trophy Case
in the Library. As presented at
Homecoming 2001, the 217 Club Projects
planned also included a complete renovation to the House basement to enlarge
and improve the House Study Room, which was dedicated in honor of Dick Horton,
BD
62. Due to a lack of sufficient funds to
secure a contractor in time for this summer, we have decided to postpone this
project until the funds and schedule allow.
This new We need your help to update 217 Ash to a 21st Century Fraternity House. Less than 10% of our Alumni have stepped up in the past two years to show their loyalty and invest in the future of Beta Deuteron, however that number continues to grow each year as our message gets out, and quality work is completed on time. Your support is needed to raise this program to a higher level that will rebuild 217 Ash into a top quality establishment to sustain another 90 years of service. Thank you for your continued support and dedication. Together we can put 217 Ash to the forefront of the Iowa State University Greek System! 2001: 67 donors 10% of Living Beta Deuteron Alumni 2002: Goal 20% Donation Rate
Actual 35 donors = 5% of Living Beta Deuteron Alumni (July 02) Projects Completed: 1. New
Kitchen Floor (Completed August 2001) Need: Old linoleum floor had worn through to the sub-flooring in multiple locations causing deterioration of the wood below. Work Done: Undergrads and local alumni moved all of the kitchen appliances, counters and cabinets out of the room, tore out the old linoleum, repaired and replaced the sub-flooring and repaired the walls. A professional contractor tiled and trimmed the room. Results: The final product looks fantastic. Mom Bert gives it high marks for quality. The work of the undergrads and local alumni saved over $1000 on the cost of this project! 2. Replaced
Bathroom Drain Piping (Completed November
2001) Need: Leaky drain piping from 2nd and 3rd Heads caused significant water damage to the floor structure as well as the Library ceiling as well as the books and trophies stored there. Work Done: The undergrads removed walls and ceilings to provide access inside the walls to the plumbers. Plumbers replaced all of the corroded steel drain piping with plastic piping which should not deteriorate. The undergrads also replaced the walls and ceilings. Result: The piping is now leak-free and the walls and ceilings were replaced with expert care. The high quality work completed by the undergrads saved us hundreds of dollars on this project! 3.
New Dining Room Floor (Completed Summer 2002) Need: The dining room floor and tiling has been deteriorating for the past few years due to age and water damage through the leaky windows. Tiles were missing and the floor was sagging. Work Done: The Undergrads living in the Charge House this summer tore out the old tile and subflooring, laid a new subfloor and prepared the area for the tilers to come in and finish the job. The men also trimmed and painted the room to finish it nicely. Result: The dining room looks great! The men did a fantastic professional job on this project. Mom Bert also replaced the ceiling fans to help finish off the room. 4. New Library Trophy Case (Scheduled for late Summer 2002) Need: This trophy case was introduced at Homecoming 2001 to be dedicated in honor of Doug Kwikkel, BD 81. This new case will provide a locked storage area for the men’s awards to display in a prominent fashion. Upcoming Projects: 1. Window Replacement (Not Currently Scheduled) Need: The windows at the rear of the House are leaking through their seals into the walls. This leakage runs to the floors of the 2nd and 3rd Floor Dorms as well as the newly replaced Dining Room floor, causing significant water damage over time. Evidence of this damage exists in the dorms, and was present in the Dining Room during construction. Work Done: Alum Dave Steffes (89) has provided the Realty Corp with a discounted offer for the installation of new Anderson Windows on each of the 3 upper floors and the basement. This offer saves us thousands of dollars, but we must raise $10,000 in order to take advantage of this offer. Again we need your help to get this done. This project will significantly improve the quality and longevity of the existing House structure. 2. Basement Renovation (Not Currently Scheduled) Need: A new House Learning Center will be constructed which will expand the existing basement study room and improve the working atmosphere of the room. This new room will be dedicated in honor of Dick Horton, BD 62. Work Done: The undergrads, area alumni and professional contractors will complete the work. 3. New Closet Units in Upstairs Living Rooms (Not Currently Scheduled) Need: The existing closet units in each room are showing the normal wear and tear due to years of use by college students. Replacing these units will improve the appearance and comfort of the rooms. Work Done: Wayne
Zieser has offered to make units for each room to replace the existing
units. 4. New Front Door (Not Currently Scheduled) Need: The existing front door and frame is showing its age and needs to be replaced for security and aesthetic reasons. 5. New Door Knobs for Upstairs Living Rooms (Not Currently Scheduled) Need: The existing doorknobs need to be replaced to improve the student’s room security. Due to all of the computer and electronics equipment students have now, security is a high priority in the House. 217 Club Mailings:March 2002 – 217
