By nature, humans have instincts to preserve their own lives and therefore engage themselves constantly in physical activities either consciously or unconsciously. Humans cannot live healthily without physical movement and quick movement is often necessary for self-preservation. In ancient times, people had no means other than their bare hands and body to defend themselves; so they developed bare-hand fighting techniques. Even at the times when arms were developed for defensive or offensive means, people continued to enjoy these bare-hand fighting techniques for the purposes of building physical strength as well as competing with each other. In the early history of the Korean peninsula, three different tribes enjoyed warrior's martial art contests during ritual seasons.
