How do I join
Anyone can join the waterski team at any time (even in the winter), just email Dan Shuman or Gus Shryack. You can also come to our next club meeting. When we figure out the exact time and place for these meetings this fall we’ll post them.
How much does it cost
Unfortunately, like everything in life, skiing at ISU isn’t free either. Fall season dues are $100 and Spring season dues are $60. If you go for the whole year you get a $10 discount and it costs $150. USAWaterski Insurance is $40.
What do I get for my money
The club is sponsored by many waterski and equipment companies who provide us with top of the line equipment at greatly reduced prices. This is ONLY available to members of the club. In addition, your dues help us purchase boat and lake time as well as provide team equipment for those of you who don’t have your own.
How good I have to be
Anyone of any skill level can join the waterski club at any time. We have several people skiing regularly for the club who have coached several years at various waterski schools around the country. We also have anywhere from absolute beginner to expert skiing in all three waterski events: slalom, trick, and jump. We also have various levels of wakeboards and I hear some of us are even thinking of going pro in professional barrel role tubing.
What is the waterski club
The waterski club is a group of waterskiers from all ability levels, beginner to expert, who love to ski....period. Our club is open to anyone who’s interested in all types of waterskiing or wakeboarding. Our club is strongly committed to helping people become better skiers and teaching people to ski who have never tried before.
What does the waterski club do
We like to practice as much as possible during the school year. Usually a boat driver is available at anytime during the weekdays. See the Driver Schedule for more exact ski times. We mainly practice the traditional three waterski events: Slalom, Trick, and Jump. We also practice many other types of skiing including wakeboarding, knee boarding, and barefooting.
In the fall and spring we travel to tournaments where we compete against other schools from the Midwest such as Kansas State, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, and Purdue. There are now over 50 teams competing in the Midwest region. Tournaments are held on weekends in September and October in the fall and in April and May in the spring. We generally leave Friday afternoon and return home to Ames Sunday night. Our activities continue year round....although sadly it’s tough to ski in the winter.
Where do you practice
We rent boat and lake time from Dream Lakes just north of Huxley, IA. The lakes are roughly fifteen minutes from campus...depending on how much you speed. This is one of the nicest waterski sites in the Midwest. There are two man-made lakes built specifically for waterskiing. Each lake has a full slalom course with one of the lakes also having a jump and jump course. We ski behind a 2005 Malibu, a really nice boat for waterskiing. We can use the boat anytime of the week between 7am and 5pm.
