The Sport Club Council budget hearing went well for the Weight Club, with our budget being approved minus our capital expense items. Greg Harris, our elected SCC Rep presented our budget very competently and endured nearly six hours of the hearing. Thanks, Greg!
The two members of the GSB finance committee present also received sheets signed by most of the SCC members present supporting the Weight Club in our endevor to finance those capital items directly from the GSB Capital Projects Fund.
The Iowa State Weight Club, with support from the Government of the Student Body, made a strong showing at the Natural Athletes Strength Association (NASA) Missouri State Powerlifting Meet in Diamond, Missouri on Saturday, February 16. The four lifters, Conor Hall, Phil Kramer, Kyle Messerly and Mark Plucinski, each brought home a first place trophy in their respective weight classes and divisions. The Weight Club, with Kramer volunteering as team coach, brought back a team victory and saw the three novice lifters completing their first full three-lift meets.
In the 165 pound weight class, Kyle Messerly, senior in Industrial Technology from Fort Dodge, worked through some initial technical glitches in the squat but went on to a 402 pound third attempt, along with a 193 pound bench press and a whopping 495 pound American Record deadlift, totaling 1086 pounds. Veteran powerlifter Phil Kramer, 2003 ISU alum of Ames, was first place in the 181 pound open and pure divisions. He made all nine of his attempts finishing with a 485 squat, 353 bench press and 579 deadlift, surpassing his own American Records in the deadlift and three lift total of 1416 pounds. Mark Plucinski, materials engineering junior from Crystal, MN, made a deep squat at 331 pounds, benched 304 and deadlifted 446 for a 1081 pound total in the 220 pound weight class. Conor Hall, kinesiology graduate student of Nashua made eight of nine attempts, getting credit for a 435 squat, 336 bench press and a personal best 546 deadlift for a 1317 pound total in the 275's.
