GAME #1: Cyclones skate to 3-3 tie in OT
The ISU Women Cyclones tied the University of Wisc.-Stout hockey team 3 to 3 Friday night Feb. 8 at Menomonie, Wisc. The game was knotted 3 to 3 at the end of the third period, sending the Cyclones and Blue Devils into a 5-minute overtime period. Both teams played tough defense and neither team was able to score in the fast-paced overtime.
Thanks to several spectacular saves by Cyclone goaltender Katie Faulds, ISU was able to preserve the 3 to 3 tie.
In the first period, ISU opened the game by scoring first at 7:16 on a goal by Amanda Machacek, with assists from Ali Webster and Sam Jenkins. Score at the end of the first period was ISU 1 and UW-Stout 0. Stout had two penalties in the first period, ISU had none.
In the second period, Stout did all the scoring. ISU had two penalties within seconds of each other early in the period. With two Cyclones in the penalty box (one tripping, one slashing)--Stout cashed in on its 5-3 player advantage by scoring a goal at 12:09. Stout scored again at 8:57 and 3:51 so the score at the end of the second period was Stout 3, ISU 1. ISU had three penalties in the second period, Stout had two.
In the third period, ISU got back on track. The Cyclones played with more enthusiasm after their lackluster second period. ISU played better defense in the third period--and also shot the puck more. The ISU Cyclones took more shots on goal than they did in either of the first two periods.
ISU scored at 8:21 in the third period to narrow Stout’s lead to 3 to 2. Cyclone Gail Starr, on a power play, alertly grabbed her own rebound and shot it past the Stout goalie, for an unassisted goal. The Cyclones kept the pressure on and despite a stubborn Stout defense, ISU scored with only 1:43 remaining in the game. Cyclone Ali Webster scored that goal to tie the game at 3 to 3, with assists from Amanda Machacek and Erin Wessling. The game ended with the score tied at 3 to 3.
The game then went into a 5-minute overtime, neither team scored and the final tally was a 3 to 3 tie. ISU had only one penalty in the third period, while Stout had four. Total penalties in the game were Stout 8, ISU 4. Total shots on goal for this game were Stout 48, ISU 29.
GAME #2: Cyclones defeat Blue Devils 5 to 3
Playing smart hockey in their second game of the two-game series, the ISU Cyclones beat the UW-Stout Blue Devils 5 to 3 on Saturday Feb. 9 at Menomonie, Wisc. After skating to a 3 to 3 tie the night before, the Cyclones were eager to win this game.
“After the first game, we could see that these two teams were pretty evenly matched in terms of talent,” says Senior forward Christy Skoglund. “We wanted to win this second game, and we knew we had to shoot the puck more than we did the night before. We also knew we had to play heads-up defense and maintain control of the puck to win.”
The Stout team ended up out-shooting the Cyclones, but the Cyclones held the Blue Devils to only three goals. The Cyclone defense and goalie Katie Faulds played a very good game, and the Cyclone offense kept skating hard. ISU kept the pressure on the Stout team when ISU got the puck, and ISU scored five goals.
Wasting no time, ISU started the scoring at the beginning of the first period on an unassisted goal by Amanda Machacek. She skated around two Stout defenders and shot the puck past the goalie at 14:33 of the first period. However, the UW-Stout team also wasted no time and quickly answered with a goal at 13:28. Score at the end of the first period was ISU 1, Stout 1. ISU had only 11 shots on goal in the first period, compared to 19 by Stout. There was one penalty in the first period and it was on ISU.
In the second period, ISU center Gail Starr, assisted by defenseman Heather Walker, broke the tie with a goal at 11:25. The two teams skated well the rest of the period, each playing tight defense, with neither team scoring until the Cyclones got a goal at the end of the period. That score came on a beautiful backhand shot by ISU forward Catherine Swoboda, with Breanna Hoffman and Christy Skoglund setting up the play. Hoffman and Skoglund got the assists on this goal with 1:44 left in the second period.
Swoboda’s goal put ISU ahead 3 to 1 at the end of the second period. Stout had two penalties in the second period, ISU had one.
In the third period, both teams again came out skating hard and playing good hockey. Stout struck first, with a goal at 7:11. Not to be deterred, ISU bounced right back at 6:57 as Amanda Machacek stole the puck from a Blue Devil player, raced in and rifled the puck past the Stout goalie. That put ISU ahead 4 to 2.
ISU added another goal with 5:41 left in the game, as Cyclone Breanna Hoffman grabbed a loose puck, skated through two Stout defenders, faked the goalie to the right and slammed a hard shot into the net. That goal, unassisted, was particularly satisfying for Hoffman, who hadn’t played since November 11 when she broke her ankle scoring a goal against South Dakota State University.
Hoffman’s goal put ISU ahead of UW-Stout by a score of 5 to 2. However, Stout wasn’t giving up and the Blue Devils came back to score a goal one minute later to make the score 5 to 3 with 4:52 left in the game. Both teams tried hard to score in the remaining minutes and it was an exciting finish as ISU held off the persistent Blue Devils. Final score was 5 to 3 in favor of the Cyclones.
Total shots on goal in this game were Stout 53, ISU 28. ISU goalie Katie Faulds played another fine game, holding off the barrage of Stout shots on goal. There were eight penalties in this game—each team had four penalties.
ISU’s next games are Feb. 16 and 17 vs. the University of Wisconsin-Madison at ISU/Ames Ice Arena. The Saturday game starts at 4:30 p.m. and the Sunday game starts at 7 a.m. NOTE THE EARLIER THAN USUAL STARTING TIMES FOR BOTH GAMES.
