ISU starts season on road at Michigan State To open the 2007-08 season the ISU Cyclone Women’s Hockey Club traveled to East Lansing, Michigan for two games on October 6 and 7. The Cyclones lost the first game 8 to 0 to the Spartans. Short on players for this long road trip, ISU lost the second game 9 to 1.

Next weekend the Cyclones travel to Minneapolis to take on the University of Minnesota Women’s Hockey Club. First game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday October 13; second game is set for 9:45 a.m. Sunday October 14 at the ice arena on the UM campus.

GAME #1: Spartans shut out Cyclones 8 to 0 It's a long drive from Ames, Iowa, to East Lansing, Michigan and ISU had only 9 skaters able to make the trip. The Michigan State Spartan Women's Hockey Club is a good, strong team and they have 20 players. Being able to substitute often and put fresh players on the ice helped the Spartans score early to take command of the game.

The final score was 8 to 0, as the Spartans held the tired and outnumbered Cyclone team scoreless.

"This was our first game of the season and we have several new players, so we're just getting started," said senior forward Catherine Swoboda. "The first two periods were rough in this game, but it was fun to get on the ice again in a game situation and see where we need to improve."

The Cyclones were out-shot as Michigan State ended up with more than twice as many shots on goal as ISU.

GAME #2: Michigan State beats ISU 9 to 1 ISU lost the second game, which was played on Sunday morning, by a score of 9 to 1. Cyclone center Gail Starr got the lone goal for ISU, in the first period.

The determined Cyclone squad, held scoreless the night before, came out skating hard and surprised the Spartans in this second game. The first period was tied 1 to 1 right up until the last few seconds when MSU took a 2 to 1 lead.

With their deep bench, the MSU team was able to send in fresh lines throughout the game, which eventually wore down the Cyclones.

"Despite the two losses this weekend, our Cyclone team showed some encouraging signs," said junior defenseman Erin Wessling. "As a team we rose to the occasion and skated hard against a team that we knew was far more experienced than us. The outcome wasn't what we wanted, but if we play the way we did this past weekend in future games, we won't find ourselves losing very often."

The ISU Cyclones play two games next weekend, October 13 and 14, in Minneapolis taking on the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Women's Hockey Club.
