GAME #1: ISU loses in overtime 5 to 4 at SDSU
The ISU Cyclone Women played well, skating to a 4 to 4 tie at the end of regulation time in an exciting game against South Dakota State University at Brookings on November 10. The teams played a 5-minute overtime period. Unfortunately for the Cyclones, the SDSU Jackrabbits scored with only 10 seconds left in overtime to win the game 5 to 4.
“Our team is improving and our work in practice paid off for us in this game,” says ISU coach Joe McCarron. “We’ve been working on our passing and our team play. We need to be taking more shots on goal. The Cyclones came out strong and got a good start in this game, scoring the first three goals of the game. We need to step up and play better defense, but that will come if we keep working together.”
The Cyclones have added a couple of new players to the roster and that helps. “We had 11 skaters in this game and SDSU had 13. That’s better than the 8 or 9 skaters our Cyclone team has had in previous games this year. Other teams have 14 to 16 players. The lack of depth on our bench has been a disadvantage for us,” says McCarron.
In the game Saturday evening November 10, ISU jumped out to a 1 to 0 lead at 15:38 of the first period on a goal by Sam Jenkins, assisted by Amanda Machacek. Both teams played at a fast pace but ISU did all the scoring in the first period. Jenkins scored her second goal at 3:26 of the first period, an unassisted goal. Soon after, with 2:01 left in the period, Machacek scored an unassisted goal to give the Cyclones a 3 to 0 lead at the end of the first period.
In the second period, SDSU scored at 10:22. ISU answered right away as Machacek slapped the puck past the Jackrabbit goalie on a beautiful passing play from Jenkins who earned the assist. However, the ISU defense let down its guard and SDSU scored two more goals in this period. SDSU scored at 7:41 and 5:32. Even so, at the end of the second period, the ISU Cyclones were still leading by a score of 4 to 3.
In the third period, SDSU scored a goal at 14:37 to tie the game at 4 to 4. The game then went into the 5 minute overtime. Both teams skated fast and furious. With only 10 seconds left, SDSU scored the goal to win the game 5 to 4.
SDSU had 7 penalties in this game, ISU had only one penalty. ISU goalie Katie Faulds did a great job holding off the hard-shooting SDSU players—as SDSU outshot the Cyclones. Shots on goal for the game were SDSU 43, ISU 33.
GAME #2: ISU drops second game 6 to 3 to SDSU
The ISU Cyclones wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the second game against SDSU, played on Sunday morning. Only 34 seconds after the opening faceoff, ISU forward Amanda Machacek scored the game’s first goal on a long shot from the blue line at 16:26 of the first period. It was an unassisted goal.
ISU scored the game’s second goal at 8:54 of the first period when Cyclone Breanna Hoffman raced in with the puck and beat the SDSU goalie. Gail Starr got the assist.
On this play Hoffman lost her balance while shooting and collided at high-speed with two SDSU players in front of the goal. Hoffman crashed into the goal and had to be helped off the ice. She ended up being taken to a hospital in Brookings where she was diagnosed with a fractured ankle. Hoffman will be out of action for 4 to 6 weeks.
SDSU scored two goals in the first period—at 6:33 and also with only 50 seconds left. So the score after one period was tied 2 to 2.
In the second period, the tide turned and SDSU gained the momentum. SDSU scored four goals and ISU only scored one. ISU’s goal came at 6:28 by Gail Starr, unassisted. Score at the end of two periods was SDSU 6, ISU 3.
There was no scoring in the third period. Final score of the game was SDSU 6, ISU 3.
Cyclone goalie Katie Faulds turned in another fine performance, fending off a barrage of shots made by the Jackrabbits. The bigger, faster SDSU players were able to slip past the ISU defenders and put the puck in the net. Final tally of shots on goal for this game was SDSU 30, ISU 22. There were a lot of penalties in this game—SDSU had 8 penalties and ISU had 7.
