Academic - LAS Graduate and Professional


The general purpose of PhysicsGSO is to provide professional and social support for graduate students in the Physics Department at Iowa State University. This will be accomplished by providing ways for graduate students to communicate with the administration of the Physics Department, connect with other graduate students, and further their education and careers by creating a strong collaborative environment.

Allowed Members All graduate students who are enrolled in the Department of Physics at Iowa State University or who are officially connected in some way with that department are eligible general members.
Allowed Officers Must meet requirements to be a general member plus have the qualifications listed. The President and Vice President have one extra qualification requirement than other officers.
Membership Qualifications The Council members (officers) of PhysicsGSO must meet the following requirements: Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 in the semester of election/appointment and during their term of office. Be in good standing with both the university and the Department of Physics. Must be enrolled as at least a half time student. The Vice President and President must have passed the two qualification exams taken by graduate students in the Physics Program.
Membership Restrictions
Elections/Selection Elections are held once per academic year during the Spring semester. The time frame is to be between March 1st and before dead week.
Meetings Meetings are to be held at least once per semester but is more likely to be closer to once per month

Description of Regular Meetings/Activities

Meetings will consist of members discussing ongoing activities in the department, bringing forth ideas and suggestions for colloquia speakers and topics, and discussing other topics related to the Physics Department and the overall wellbeing of the students.

Description of Special Events

The PGSO members and officers are responsible for organizing the yearly Department picnic and potluck as well as the classes geared toward helping the graduate students study for the qualification exams. Other special events will be decided on during the first year of the organizations existence.
