The Satellite Research Group (SRG) at Iowa State University is established to unite like-minded individuals passionate about satellite engineering. Through collaboration, innovation, and engagement, the SRG aims to advance knowledge, design, prototype, and test satellite-related projects in competitions nationwide.

SRG is a student-led club for anyone interested in satellites, space hardware, and the engineering that makes them work. We bring together students from different majors and experience levels to learn, collaborate, and build skills through real projects and hands-on work.

Our focus is on growing practical capability: learning how satellite missions are designed, exploring key subsystems, and building prototypes that move from concept to testing. Members can get involved in areas like structures and CAD, electronics and avionics, communications and RF, software, and testing/operations, while also developing the teamwork and project organization that larger aerospace programs rely on.

We also prioritize an approachable on-ramp for new members. If you’re new to satellites, SRG is designed to help you get up to speed through mentorship, documentation, and small starter tasks that lead into bigger responsibilities over time. If you already have experience, SRG gives you a place to lead, mentor, and help shape the direction of projects.

Ultimately, SRG exists to make satellite engineering accessible at Iowa State: a consistent team, consistent momentum, and a path from learning to building to competing.

Satellite Research Group meets every Tuesday at 7:30 in Room 1106 of the Industrial Engineering Building. Workdays are Thursdays at 5:30 in the Industrial Engineering main computer lab.
