Academic - Engineering Political & Activism

The Society of Ethical Engineers is an organization devoted to the widespread advocacy for developing an understanding amongst students of the ethical and existential consequences of technological developments of the past, present, and future, connecting them with other perspectives to help see the bigger picture. An example of a relevant topic we would discuss with our members and bring different perspectives into could be Climate Change. Factoring in, for example, the anthropological, cultural, philosophical, psychological, geological, agricultural, political, economic, meteorological, historical, and linguistic viewpoints on the topic would help students and faculty from all departments come to understand the issue more and see slices of the bigger picture.

Description of Regular Meetings/Activities

At regular meetings, we intend to meet with members of the organization to discuss topics relating to the field of Engineering Ethics, with presentations set up by the executive board with prompts and discussion topics. By raising awareness of Ethics in the field of Engineering, we hope to help mold more versatile and conscientious engineers as they enter their industry.

Description of Special Events

For special events, we intend to have guest speakers with knowledge in the field of Engineering Ethics give a talk about its importance, such as a machine learning programmer coming in to talk about the Ethics of AI implementation.
