Find us at the University Club Fest during both semesters, and anyone who is interested in joining is welcome to come to our Freshman/Transfer BBQ during the first week of school in August!
Membership Restrictions Must attend a new initiate meeting at the beginning of the semester and will be told how they can become a member of the Iowa State Block and Bridle Club. New Initiates must create a "B" that represents themselves, along with collecting 10 signatures from any current Block and Bridle members and Animal Science faculty/staff, and present it at the second meeting on the semester where they will be initiated.
Elections/Selection Elections are held in December with officer terms extending 12 months. Interested members must fill out an application and the outgoing senior officers and at least one of the advisors will determine the ballot. The ballot will be sent out to all club members via e-mail before elections. Candidates who make the ballot will then give up to a 3 minute speech at the December meeting. Meetings Meetings are on a specified Wednesdays of every month at 7:00 PM.

Description of Regular Meetings/Activities

All meetings require business professional dress. During monthly meetings we have industry speakers, talk about upcoming events, as well as any other basic club functions that need to be addressed.

Description of Special Events

Hunger Fight- Block and Bridle hosts our annual Hunger Fight during CALS Week every year to package meals for less fortunate individuals. This year we are partnering up with Meals for the Heartland in September to make meals for the Des Moines area community.
Little North American (LNA) Showmanship Contest- The annual LNA contest is held every fall for all students at Iowa State to gain new experiences at showing livestock.
Cyclone Classic - An IJBBA sanctioned preview show that serves as the 3rd largest cattle show in Iowa that is held every spring at the Hansen Ag Student Learning Center.
Animal Learning Day- Every spring we put on Animal Learning Day at the Hansen Ag Student Learning Center which is an educational opportunity for the public to come in and learn about modern day livestock production. A "day on the farm" gives adults and children a chance to grasp a better knowledge on all animals from cats to cows.
Spring Clean Up Day - Originally started in 2018, we designate a weekend every spring to volunteer and help clean up the University Teaching Farms as well as Kildee Hall. We are very proud of our Animal Science Department and its facilities and want to strive to keep it up in the best shape possible.
Spring Market Hog Show - A hog show held every February at the Hansen Ag Student Learning Center for junior exhibitors who show during the winter circuit. In addition, we invite the Iowa Pork Producers Association to incorporate an educational component and we help put on a Skill-A-Thon and judging contest for all exhibitors.
Freshman/Transfer BBQ - A social gathering to kick off the new school year! We invite all freshman and transfer students who are interested in joining the Block and Bridle Club during the first week of school to Kildee Hall to welcome them to our Animal Science Department. A free meal is provided and prospective members get the chance to talk to club officers and different interest groups.
Proven to Win Pig Sale - In March we host a pig sale at the Hansen Ag Student Learning Center where we invite all show pig breeders from across Iowa and ISU Alumni to consign to this sale. All pigs are sold to 4-H and FFA youth where most will go on to show at their County and State Fairs. In addition, we put on a showmanship clinic for the youth and answer any questions they have on how to get started with their show pig project.
Animal Science Banquet - We are in charge of organizing the Animal Science Department Banquet every April. The banquet honors all student, faculty/staff, and alumni achievements within the past year. A scholarship reception is hosted in addition to acknowledge all Animal Science scholarship recipients. A catered meal, live entertainment, and a silent auction is also included.
Iowa FFA Poultry Career Development Event (CDE) - Our Poultry Interest Group organizes the Iowa FFA Poultry Judging Contest every spring during the Iowa FFA Convention. There are several components to the contest ranging from carcass evaluation to egg grading, and this year we broke the record of hosting the biggest CDE in Iowa FFA history with over 440 contestants!
