Founded in December of 1975 at Kean University in Union, New Jersey, the purpose of this organization was to create a support group for Latinas pursuing higher education, and to unite the Latino community through programs and services. Lambda Theta Alpha has been established as an academic sorority with goals focused on community and political activism. Their colors are burgundy and grey with the principles of Unity, Love, and Respect. Their symbols are Pearls, Shell, Palm Tree, and a Moon. They are the first Latina sorority in the nation and the largest Latina-based sorority in the U.S. Since 1975, it has been their mission to provide sisterhood based on Unity, Love, and Respect. Not only this, but they develop strong leaders who provide and practice political, social, and cultural activities. Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. also promotes Latino unity through charitable and educational programs. They maintain a high standard of learning and serve as a voice for all Latino students. Overall, Lambda Theta Alpha promotes and demonstrates female independency through their members. These members represent various races, ethnicities, and backgrounds something that is emulated in their motto, Latin by Tradition, Not by Definition. Lambda Theta Alpha, Latin Sorority Inc. is an official member of the National Association of Latino Fraternal Organizations (NALFO), of which they have been recognized as Latina Sorority of the Year in 2000-02, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2009-10, 2011-12, 2012-13. Lambda Theta Alpha continues this excellence through their alumnae and graduate chapters.
