The purpose of this club at Iowa State is to provide events and educational materials on diabetes and diabetes prevention. Our club is open to any Iowa State student or staff member or community members who have an interest in diabetes or health. Under the guidance of a former ISU Diabetes Club advisor and an Employee Wellness Dietitian at ISU, we will accomplish our goals by providing peer support through presentations to various student and employee groups. Through both our big and small events, we hope that we can encourage others to be more aware of diabetes and what can be done to prevent it. Additionally, we plan to organize some kind of "Dodge Diabetes Walk" on campus to provide exercise and education on diabetes prevention. Along with that, we hope to sign up a team of walkers from Iowa State for the "Step Out Walk" in Des Moines in the fall. We also want to plan another big event during November, which is American Diabetes month. We have been in contact with a diabetes company who is interested in helping us get a big name speaker on campus, such as an Olympic athlete with diabetes. Through both our big and small events, we hope that we can encourage others to be more aware of diabetes and what can be done to prevent it.
