About RootLess Student Organization Meetings

“RootLess” is a recognized student organization with Iowa State University and is one component of the overall Collegiate Recovery Community.

The focus of the student organization is to build community among students in recovery, students seeking recovery, students who have a friend or loved on in recovery, and allies of the recovery community.
The organization’s function is to plan social opportunities for students to connect without the presence of alcohol or drugs or others who are under the influence of these substances.  In addition, the organization will raise awareness among the university community about recovery to help connect other students with the overall Collegiate Recovery Community program through Student Health and Wellness.

Student Organization Meeting Guidelines

RootLess student organization will be meeting weekly in spring 2020 from 6-7pm in Lagomarcino Hall -Room 1520.
The meetings are peer led and will focus on getting to know each other, building community, planning events, and creating a safe space for people to connect who may have similar life experiences.

These meetings are not treatment focused.  They are not meant to serve as medical or health related therapy or counseling.  Rather they are peer led meetings focused on the mission of our organization.

During these meetings, it is likely that as we connect, we may share stories of similar struggles or experiences with addiction.  We want this to be a safe space and allow students to connect as their authentic selves.

In order to maintain a safe environment, we expect that students will not share others’ experiences or stories with anyone outside the student organization.  Hearing others’ stories does not give permission to share those stories.  However, if students share experiences of academic or personal struggles, such as self-harm, significant mental health concerns, or other struggles that may be impacting their wellbeing or academic success, that information will be shared with our advisers so that they can connect with the student to provide support and resources.  We are a community of care and if one of us is struggling, we want to make sure they are connected to the appropriate support systems at ISU.  Resources can be found at this website: https://www.studentwellness.iastate.edu/recovery-resources/

Occasionally, the advisers of RootLess will attend the meetings to connect with students and to get feedback from students on upcoming resources and services they are continually working on to expand the Collegiate Recovery Community program at ISU.
