Past Project: EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge

Team Leader: Kennedy Cook, kennedyc@iastate.edu

Meetings: Thursday; 3:30 PM-4:30 PM; Parks Library and on WebEx

In the fall semester of 2017, ESW participated in the EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge. For this project, our team designed and proposed stormwater management solutions surrounding the athletic complex to the EPA. We were really proud of the work we put into this project, so we want to keep going! This semester, we will begin pursuing a goal of implementing some of our solutions within the athletic complex. With the help of Dr. Michael Perez from the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering, we will begin to take action this semester.

Goal: To design a green infrastructure system that focuses on stormwater management around our campus!

Safety: In order to keep our members safe we provide virtual options to join our meetings and wear face coverings and maintain physical distance.

Motivational Quote:

“Never be afraid to try something new, because life gets boring when you stay within the limits of what you already know.”

Past Project: Precious Plastic

Project Leader: Michaela Esveld (meslveld@iastate.edu)

Meetings: Tuesdays at 6:10 on Microsoft Teams or at Boyd Lab

ESW launched this project Fall 2018. We aim to, use and develop our skills for the purpose of showing off what can be done with waste plastic. Currently building a shredder as the first step in a mechanical recycling process for plastic. This will be a small system that we hope to use as a showcase for future outreach events. The goal is to add value to waste while informing and entertaining anyone who wishes to engage with our recycling system.

Safety: Meetings held virtually when not building when at the lab physical distancing is observed and face coverings are used.
