Service & Volunteerism

Description

We work with Habitat for Humanity of Central Iowa and Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity to help with the construction of "simple, decent, and affordable" homes for families in need of housing. We also have fundraising events throughout the semester to raise money and advocate our student chapter. For spring break, we take students on Collegiate Challenge trips which involve going to another state and helping them build homes.

Description of Regular Meetings/Activities

General meetings are typically held once a month. In a general meeting we will cover the following: a brief overview of the club and our goals, upcoming build days, brief description of build day logistics, upcoming fundraising opportunities, and upcoming social events. After the meeting, students will get a chance to sign up for the upcoming build days.

Description of Special Events

Build Days: Build days are possibly one of the most exciting parts of this organization. These are days in which students get the opportunity to travel to an unfinished home and actually help build it! Never swung a hammer before? Don't worry! No construction experience is necessary! Typical build days take place Saturday morning/afternoon in Des Moines. Transportation is provided and a break for lunch is given. There are also build days in Boone and Ames, so be on the lookout for emails regarding upcoming builds. More information can be gathered at the meetings or by contacting a club officer.
Social Events: Social events are a great way to chill out and meet some great new people. It's been said that members of Habitat are some of the coolest dudes and dudettes around. Pay your dues and come see what all the fuss is about. Past events include BBQs, bowling nights, pizza parties, you name it, we've done it!
Fundraising: Fundraising is a crucial part of this Organization, not just so the club can function, but also to help better the community. We are always looking for help passing out flyers for a Panda Express Fundraiser or helping bake cookies for a bake sale. If you have any fun ideas for how to raise money, just reach out to a club officer and we'll gladly take your suggestion.
