2021-2022 Skydiving Collegiate Nationals

Every year there is a national competition for young skydivers still in college called Collegiate Nationals. For the first time in a few years the club had a team big enough to go compete. In the picture above is the team that went to Skydive Elsinore to compete alongside members from other universities across the country including University of Connecticut, Western Michigan, U.S Army at West Point Parachute team, U.S. Navy Parachute team, and U.S. Airforce Academy Parachute team. The team competed in two of the four categories at the competition. The first category we competed in is sport accuracy. This is where divers perform a hop n' pop at 4-5 thousand feet and then try to land as close to a target as they can. The other category we competed in is called a two way formation. In this category two skydivers jump out of the plane together and grab onto each other. They then let go do a few different positions and then grab back onto each other while still falling. This is called a block. The goal in a two way formation is to do as many blocks as you can and is judged by a third skydiver falling above them with a camera. While at the competition getting to know the other competing skydivers, judges, and camera flyers was incredible. Most of the judges and camera flyers also compete in the standard National Skydiving Competition.

Des Moines Skydivers

Being a part of the local skydiving group in central Iowa means club members have the option to join The Des Moines Skydivers Club. This is the group based out of Skydive Des Moines in Winterset, IA. This is what we like to consider our primary drop-zone because of a long standing relationship with the members and coaches as well as the location relative to Ames. Having members that are a part of this groups ensures the club stay up to date and informed with new safety guidelines. In addition to safety guidelines, having members in The Des Moines Skydivers Club helps the club stay connected to local skydiving activities and events.
