The graduate students of the Iowa State University Department of Mathematics annually award the Vinograde Award to faculty members for excellence in teaching and advising of graduate students. The names of winners are engraved on the Vinograde Award plaques and displayed in Carver 404 (the Faculty and Graduate lounge) for all to see.

In the spring of odd-numbered years, the award is given for Excellence in Teaching, and in spring of even-numbered years, the award is given for Excellence in Advising.

To be considered for the award for Excellence in Teaching, nominees must be tenured faculty, must have taught at least three graduate courses, must have taught a graduate course within the last three years, and must have been nominated by a current graduate student. The most recent winner of the Teaching award is not eligible to win the award, but previous winners are.

To be considered for the award for Excellence in Advising, nominees must be tenured faculty, must have advised at least 1 PhD or 3 Masters students who have completed or will have completed their degrees at ISU by the end of the current Spring semester, and must have been nominated by a current graduate student. The most recent winner of the Advising award is not eligible to win the award, but previous winners are.

The Council of the MathGSO selects a committee to solicit nominations and determine the winner of the award each year, as described by the Constitution of the Mathematics Graduate Student Organization.

This award is named for Dr. Bernard Vinograde, who was a professor in the Department of Mathematics at Iowa State University for 35 years, including almost four years of service as department chair.
