Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the SHOP. We currently have a 2-tiered system for students looking to help. The first tier is “volunteer,” for people who typically volunteer 3 hours/semester or less while the second tier, “club member,” requires at least 6 hours/semester. Club members should attend at least one general meeting per semester and complete a short Canvas training, which is linked below. The training goes over general information on food insecurity/dignity, as well as our policies.

Shifts are in 1-hour increments, and you can sign up for shifts back-to-back. There is no limit to how much someone at either level of involvement may volunteer. We welcome individuals in both tiers and hope they provide opportunities for all levels of involvement.

Here are our current open hours:

Monday, 12 PM – 5 PM

Tuesday, 12 PM – 5 PM

Wednesday, 2 PM – 7PM

The SHOP is located at 1306 Beyer Hall. When you get to the SHOP, you can check in for your shift through Qualtrics. The main responsibility for volunteers is to check out guests. Guests will place their items on the scale, scan their ISU ID, and you will use PantrySoft (on the computer) to record the number of pounds they are checking out.

As a volunteer, you will be responsible for welcoming people into SHOP, assisting SHOP users in finding items and answering questions. If items have recently been delivered to SHOP, volunteers will also assist in stocking shelves. If it's slow/there are extra volunteers signed up, here are some things you can do to pass the time:

-Organize items on the shelves

-Make sure food in the fridges is fresh, and that cans are not dented (food safety checks)

-Wipe counters/handles

-Breaking down boxes and taking recycling

A few notes on volunteering: Make sure that guests are following item limits, which are available on the screens behind the counter. This is to ensure that food is evenly distributed throughout the week. Also check that guests are using baskets to shop. Our scales are tared to the weight of the baskets, so this keeps our tracking accurate.

Thank you again for your interest! We couldn’t keep the SHOP running without each and every single one of our volunteers.
