Description
The Underwater Robotics Club at Iowa State is a student-led team that designs, builds, and pilots underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to compete in the international MATE ROV competition. The club focuses on developing students’ skills in robotics, mechanical and electrical design, and problem-solving through hands-on engineering projects and real-world challenges. We strive to create a supportive and energetic environment that takes engineering seriously while still valuing collaboration, creativity, and humor.
The MATE ROV Competition is an international engineering challenge in which teams are given a limited time window to pilot their ROVs through a series of mission-based tasks. Each year introduces a new problem scenario, requiring teams to design, test, and refine a custom underwater robot to complete tasks inspired by real ocean engineering applications. As part of this process, the club focuses on developing a robotic arm to interact with and complete these tasks.
